Bongo Maffin, formed in 1996, began as a project of South African deejay Oscar. The group features Appleseed, who was born and raised in Zimbabwe and infuses a distinct Shona and reggae flavor into their music. Stoan started his musical career as a singer for the kwaito band Thebe, while Thandwisa (Red), a Xhosa girl from the Eastern Cape, joined in 1997 after working with the group as a backup singer and studio musician. Bongo Maffin's music is rooted in the rhythms of house music, blending reggae, dancehall, rap, and contemporary R&B, while incorporating elements from South Africa's diverse musical landscape, including mbaqanga, gospel, the choral sound of iscathamiya, and kwaito. Their expansive and spiritual approach to dance-oriented music has drawn comparisons to the Fugees' innovative take on American hip-hop.
