Clifford Brown, nicknamed 'Brownie', was an American jazz trumpet player born on October 30, 1930, in Wilmington, Delaware. He passed away on June 26, 1956, in Bedford, Pennsylvania. Brown was influenced by notable musicians, including his main mentor. He performed with R&B bandleader and several other artists before forming his own quintet, co-led with another musician. Tragically, Brown and pianist Elmo Hope were killed in a car crash while being driven by Hope's wife, Nancy, on a rainy night on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Brown is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware. He won the "Down Beat" critics' poll for ‘New Star of the Year’ in 1954 and was inducted into the "Down Beat" Jazz Hall of Fame in 1972.
