Caliph8
Arvin Nogueras, also known as Caliph8 (mostly associated with early Manila graffiti and Hip-hop mutations), sees his work as a continuum.
Since the early '90s, his interest in diverse art forms has allowed him to cross and merge different disciplines - namely visual pieces, sound installations, and live performances (to name a few). Deploying sheets of polyrhythmic beats, one-note samples, and deconstructed sound sequences, he creates an aural continuity between the sampled musician and the synthesis.
Collecting vinyl records since the early '90s, his influences span a diverse plethora of genres, from true school hip-hop, experimental, psych, folk, soul, jazz, no wave, noise, sound art, and ethnomusicology, among others. He combines these elements and creates interesting new iterations through sample-based composition.
