The Wajang Diskotheque
Wajang Diskotheque is a collective of creators and curators in Trinidad's capital, Port of Spain. It was founded by Trinidadian Writer Attillah Springer, German DJ, producer, and Cree Records head honcho Merten Kaatz, and Scottish artist Peter Doig.
Since 2017, the Wajang Diskotheque has existed as an ad hoc underground club night focused on hard-to-find or forgotten vinyl classics and contemporary soca, rapso, zouk, soukous, reggae, and other music of the Caribbean and African diasporas.
From Emancipation celebrations focused on the musical activism of Lancelot Layne to a podcast on the journey of Afro-Latin musical traditions to Trinidad, from interviews with Guggenheim Fellow and jazz trumpeter Etienne Charles to a public art project with Belmont Secondary School, the Wajang Diskotheque is steeped in the work of contemporary documentation and archive activism, exploring and reviving dying, underrepresented or lost forms of cultural production to create new ways to engage with diverse audiences.
