23 Skidoo is a British band formed in 1979, known for their fusion of industrial, post-punk, alternative dance, rock, and world music. The group, originally consisting of Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull, and Sam Mills, later included Alex Turnbull and Tom Heslop. Their name is derived from an early 20th-century American slang phrase referenced in the works of notable figures such as Aleister Crowley and William S. Burroughs. The band's musical influences range from martial arts and Burundi drumming to the works of Fela Kuti and The Last Poets, as well as the emerging sounds of industrial and post-punk artists like A Certain Ratio and Throbbing Gristle. They released their first single, "Ethics," in 1980, followed by the "Last Words" 12" produced by Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire. A Peel Session was recorded in 1981, and their debut album, Seven Songs, came out in 1982, noted for its evocative sound reminiscent of an African forest. After an experimental EP titled Tearing Up The Plans, which was produced without the Turnbull brothers, the lineup changed with the addition of slap-bassist Peter "Sketch" Martin. The band shifted their focus towards hip hop in the late 1980s, releasing several singles and a compilation album, Just Like Everybody, in 1987. They formed the Ronin label in 1989,
