23 Skidoo is a British band formed in 1979, known for their fusion of industrial, post-punk, alternative dance, rock, and world music. The group consists of Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull, Sam Mills, Alex Turnbull, and Tom Heslop, and was influenced by various cultural elements, including martial arts, Burundi and Kodo drumming, and the works of Fela Kuti and William S. Burroughs. Their debut release was the 7" single "Ethics" in 1980, followed by the "Last Words" 12" produced by Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire. A Peel Session was recorded in 1981, and their first album, Seven Songs, came out in 1982, noted for its evocative sound. An experimental EP, Tearing Up The Plans, was released without the Turnbull brothers, who were traveling in Indonesia at the time. The lineup changed with the addition of slap-bassist Peter "Sketch" Martin after the departure of Mills and Heslop. Upon the Turnbull brothers' return from Indonesia, the band collaborated with Aswad's horn section for the "Coup" 12" and was accused of being plagiarized by The Chemical Brothers. Their later works, including The Culling Is Coming (1983) and Urban Gamelan (1984), faced criticism for their abstract sound.
