24-7 Spyz, pronounced "twenty four seven spies," was formed in the South Bronx, New York, in 1986 by vocalist P. Fluid, guitarist Jimi Hazel, bassist Rick Skatore, and drummer Kindu Phibes, who was later replaced by Anthony Johnson. The band signed to In-Effect/Relativity Records in 1988, and their debut album, "Harder Than You," was released the following year. Although it initially sold poorly, the album gained traction after MTV and radio began playing their cover of Kool & The Gang's "Jungle Boogie," reaching a peak position of #113 on the Billboard 200 charts. Their 1990 follow-up, "Gumbo Millennium," debuted lower at #135 but sold over 300,000 copies. After its release, both P. Fluid and Anthony Johnson left the band due to musical and personal differences, with Jeff Brodnax and Joel Maitoza joining as replacements. The new lineup recorded the "This Is...24-7 Spyz!" EP in 1991 and their third full-length album, "Strength In Numbers." Despite moderate success for singles like "Stuntman" and "Break The Chains," neither release charted, leading to Brodnax and Maitoza's departure after the band was dropped from East West Records.
