400 Lonely Things is a musical project that began recording in 1988, originally formed by members Craig Varian and Jonathan McCall. The project adopted its current name in 2002. Known for its use of obscure sampling, 400 Lonely Things crafts mostly instrumental melodic collages characterized by melancholic textures and psychedelic drone. The music often explores themes of hauntology, dark ambient, experimental, electronic, and New Age genres. Following the passing of Jonathan McCall in 2020, Craig Varian continues to carry on the project as its sole member, describing 400 Lonely Things as "Dark New Age for the New Dark Age."
