52nd Street was a British jazz-funk and R&B band formed in Manchester in 1980. The original line-up included members on guitar, on bass, Desmond Isaacs on keyboards, on drums, and Jennifer McCloud on vocals. Within six months, had replaced Desmond Isaacs on keyboards and had replaced Jennifer McCloud. The band was pursued by two major UK labels but ultimately chose to sign with Factory Records. Between 1982 and 1984, 52nd Street released three singles, two of which became hits on the US Billboard Dance Chart: "Cool As Ice" and "Can't Afford." In early 1985, the band left Factory Records, initially intending to join A&M Records under newly appointed A&R manager Lindsay Wesker, but at the last moment signed with Virgin Records instead. Their debut album, produced in Philadelphia by a highly sought-after producer known for his work with soul R&B acts, was a commercial success. The album, titled "Children Of The Night," included their biggest hit in the U.S., "Tell Me (How It Feels)," which reached No. 8 on the R'n'B Billboard charts and No. 54 on the UK pop chart. The line-up changed slightly during the Virgin/MCA period, with one member having already replaced another.
