A Hawk and a Hacksaw is a musical project from Albuquerque, New Mexico, led by Jeremy Barnes, who previously gained recognition as the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel. Barnes crafts a playfully gothic atmosphere through his multi-layered and frantic compositions, blending field recordings with accordion, piano, and bursts of drunken choruses to create a unique and unsettling orchestral sound. His songs can shift direction based on everyday sounds, such as a dog's bark or a ringing phone, resulting in an intriguing mix of cacophony and sweet, hymn-like harmonies.
