A Tribe Called Quest was a critically acclaimed rap group formed in 1988 in Queens, New York City. The original members included Kamaal Ibn John Fareed (formerly known as Jonathan Davis), DJ, and Malik Taylor (Phife Dawg). They started as part of the Native Tongues Posse alongside other notable artists. The group gained prominence with their debut single "Description Of A Fool" in August 1989, followed by the hit "Bonita Applebum," which was inspired by a classmate. Their significant breakthrough came with "Can I Kick It?" which showcased their unique jazz/hip-hop blend and earned the first-ever "5-star" award from Source Magazine. Their debut album, "People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm," was eclectic and humorous, while their second album, "The Low-End Theory," recorded as a trio after the departure of Jarobi, combined boom bap beats with jazz, funk, and soul melodies. They were notably assisted by jazz bassist Ron Carter. The group stirred controversy with tracks like "The Infamous Date Rape" and made intelligent use of samples from various artists. A Tribe Called Quest received the "Group Of The Year" award at the inaugural Source Magazine Hip Hop Award Show in 1994, following the release of their third album, "Midnight Marauders."
