ABC is a British pop band formed in 1980 in Sheffield, UK. They are best known for hits like "The Look of Love" and "When Smokey Sings," which gained popularity in the 1980s. The band began as a project involving Mark White and Stephen Singleton, who initially released an EP in 1979 and contributed to a compilation before inviting Martin Fry to join as the vocalist. Fry, who was running his own fanzine called Modern Drugs while attending Sheffield University, became integral to the band after interviewing White and Singleton. With Fry's leadership, the band transitioned to a more pop-oriented sound by collaborating with a producer and officially adopted the name ABC. They signed a record contract with Phonogram Records in 1981, which also distributed their own label, Neutron. ABC released their debut single, "Tears Are Not Enough," in November 1981, which peaked at number 19 on the U.K. charts. Since 1991, ABC has primarily been a solo project for Martin Fry, who continues to work with various musicians. The band remains active in recording and touring.
