Abdullah Ibrahim, born Adolph Johannes Brand in Cape Town in 1934, is a legendary South African jazz musician known primarily for his work on the piano and saxophone. He earned the nickname "Dollar" as a youth due to his frequent purchases of jazz LPs from American soldiers. In 1968, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim, although he continued to perform and record under his original moniker for several years. His composition "Mannenberg," released in 1974, is regarded as a seminal piece of South African heritage and has been referred to as an unofficial South African anthem. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2009.
