Afoxé Filhos de Gandhi, originally founded as "Comendo Coentro" (Eating Coriander) by port dockers in Salvador city, was established on February 18, 1949, by Durval Marques da Silva, known as “Vavá Madeira,” along with colleagues such as Hermes Agostinho dos Santos, “o Soldado,” Manoel José dos Santos, “Guarda-Sol,” and Almir Passos Fialho, “o Mica.” Initially formed as a recreational association, the group paraded for the first time as a “cordão.” By 1951, it began to welcome various workers and has since become the largest and most beautiful Afoxé of Salvador Carnival in Bahia. In its early years, Afoxé Filhos de Gandhi performed marchinhas before focusing on Ijexá, even composing their own songs. Afoxé is recognized as a cultural expression of traditional African religion terreiro-communities in Brazil.
