Grand Kalle et l'African Jazz, often referred to simply as African Jazz, was one of the first full-time, professional bands in the Belgian Congo, now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Founded in 1953 by Joseph Kabasele Tshamala, popularly known as Grand Kalle, the band played a significant role in the music scene until it split in 1963. The band featured various members during its active years. Grand Kalle served as the leader and vocalist, while other notable members included guitarists Mwamba and an unnamed guitarist, as well as Albert Taumani on bass. Joseph Mwena also played bass from 1953 to 1963. The percussion section included Baskis and another unnamed percussionist. Isaac Musekiwa contributed on saxophone starting in 1954, and a range of vocalists, including an unnamed vocalist on maracas, participated until 1963. The brass section featured Dominique on trumpet and additional saxophonists. Throughout its history, the band saw changes in its lineup, with members such as Pierre "Petit Pierre" Yantula on congas and Charles Hénault on drums joining in 1960.
