African System Orch.

African System Orchestra was a Cameroonian-led ensemble active in Nigeria during the late 1970s and early 1980s, founded and fronted by guitarist Tambwe Dongo "Pecos". The band gained recognition for its unique fusion of Nigerian highlife and Congolese soukous, heavily influenced by the guitar style of Prince Nico Mbarga. Based in Lagos, their repertoire included tracks such as "Fine Country" and "Agnes My Love", highlighting their seamless blend of pulsating rhythms and melodic guitar interplay. Their sound represented a cross-cultural highlife interpretation enriched with soukous flair, capturing the vibrancy of West African dance music from that era. Despite a relatively limited discography and the rarity of original vinyl releases, African System Orchestra has achieved cult status among collectors and DJs for their energetic grooves and vintage rarities. Their most notable release, the self-titled LP from 1978, is frequently cited in discographies and highlife retrospectives.
