African System Orchestra was a Cameroonian-led ensemble active in Nigeria during the late 1970s and early 1980s, founded and fronted by guitarist Tambwe Dongo "Pecos." The band gained recognition for their distinctive fusion of Nigerian highlife and Congolese soukous, heavily inspired by the guitar style of Prince Nico Mbarga. Formed in Lagos, their repertoire included tracks such as "Fine Country" and "Agnes My Love," showcasing a seamless blend of pulsating rhythm sections and melodic guitar interplay. Their sound offered a cross-cultural highlife interpretation enriched with soukous flair, encapsulating the vibrancy of West African dance music from that era. Despite a relatively limited discography and the rarity of original vinyl releases, African System Orchestra has achieved cult status among collectors and DJs for their energetic grooves and vintage rarities. Their most notable release is the 1978 self-titled LP, frequently cited in discographies and highlife retrospectives.
