**Bio: Afrika Bambaataa** Afrika Bambaataa, born on April 17, 1957, in the Bronx, NY, USA, is a pioneering American hip hop artist and DJ, best known for his influential role in the development of hip hop culture. He adopted the stage name Afrika Bambaataa Aasim, inspired by a nineteenth-century Zulu chief, and is of West Indian descent. Growing up in New York’s South Bronx, Bambaataa combined his musical eclecticism with a vision for African American social and racial unity. In the mid-1970s, he emerged as one of the key figures in New York’s burgeoning hip hop scene, contributing to rapping, DJ mixing/scratching, graffiti, and breakdancing. Alongside two other Bronx DJs, he began creating rhythm tracks for rappers by blending small percussive sections from obscure rock, funk, and electro-pop records with cartoon melodies and film themes. Inspired by the British film 'Zulu', Bambaataa founded the 'Universal Zulu Nation', a loosely organized group of hip hop's cultural luminaries. In 1984, he fulfilled a lifelong ambition by recording "Unity," a duet with another artist. He is also the founder of a record label in collaboration with a German sprayer.
