Agitation Free was formed in Berlin, Germany, in 1967 by Lutz 'Lüül' Ulbrich, Michael 'Fame' Günther, Lutz 'Ludwig' Kramer, and Christoph 'Chrille' Franke. The group initially started as "Agitation" in late 1966 through the merger of members from the Berlin rock bands "The Centries" and "The Ugly Things." They changed their name to Agitation Free due to another band having the same name, opting for the name based on a promotional poster for a gig with free admission. Known for their multimedia light shows, Agitation Free became the house band for the notorious Zodiac club in Berlin. In 1968, they briefly added a vocalist, who was dismissed within the year, possibly due to his provocative stage behavior. In 1970, a member left and was replaced, while Christoph Franke departed to join another band. The group then recruited new members to stabilize as a quintet in 1971. In 1972, Agitation Free toured Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Greece, during which they recorded material for their first LP, Malesch, released in June 1972. In March 1973, a member left and was replaced, and a second drummer joined the group. This lineup was featured on the posthumous release Last. They recorded their second LP in Munich in July 1973, after which another member quit and was replaced
