Akiko Yano, born Akiko Suzuki on February 13, 1955, in Tokyo, is a celebrated Japanese musician known for her unique blend of whimsical mischief and jazz piano. She studied jazz piano in high school and released her debut album, Japanese Girl, in 1976, which made a significant impact on the Japanese music scene due to her distinctive style. Following a brief marriage to Makoto Yano, the producer of her first album, she became the wife and musical partner of renowned composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. During the early '80s, Yano toured worldwide with the Yellow Magic Orchestra and began to gain recognition in the US, performing with bands like Little Feat and contributing to recordings with UK rock band Japan. After separating from Sakamoto, she relocated to New York in the '90s, where she continues to perform and record, primarily within the jazz genre.
