Alan Lamb was born in 1944 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He had limited formal musical education, joining a secondary school choir and learning piano privately from age 8 to 17. Lamb spent his childhood in the countryside near Dunning in Perthshire, where he was cared for by a nanny he affectionately called 'My,' who introduced him to the concept of 'wire music.' As a composer and biomedical research scientist based in Perth, Lamb developed an innovative body of work centered around the resonance of 'singing wires.' He often created gongs and flutes from short pieces of wire, as well as wooden and metal rods and tubes, hanging them by strings from the wires. When activated by the wind, these instruments produced a variety of sounds and rhythms transmitted into the wires. The strings themselves contributed to a unique sound, and when the wind caused them to resonate with the wire frequencies, they produced a sound reminiscent of Pan's pipes. Alan Lamb passed away on April 19, 2025, at the age of 81.
