Alberto Betancourt was born on January 17, 1936, in Medellin, Colombia, into a family dedicated to science and the arts. As a young teenager, he earned the title of Professor of Mathematics while also pursuing music as a hobby under the guidance of Slavic organist Nicolás Mihahevic. Betancourt taught high mathematics at the University of Guatemala for eight years, during which he furthered his musical studies at the local conservatory. Ultimately, he chose to dedicate himself to music. His classical style was influenced by Joe Keesler, Jim Christal, and Harold Blanchard during his time in the United States. He later moved to Mexico, accompanied by a Guatemalan drummer who shared his enthusiasm for introducing classical music to the youth.
