Aleister Crowley, born Edward Alexander Crowley on 12 October 1875 in Leamington, Warwickshire, England, became one of Britain's most notorious figures, earning the title "The Wickedest Man in the World" from the British tabloids, though he preferred to be known as "The Beast," a name given to him by his devout Plymouth Brethren mother. Crowley passed away on 1 December 1947. In addition to his controversial reputation, Crowley was a skilled mountaineer, writer, chess master, painter, and poet. He is best known for his role as a pioneering ritual magician, sexual libertarian, and drug addict.
