Alex de Grassi, born on February 13, 1952, in Yokosuka, Japan, is a Grammy Award-nominated American fingerstyle guitarist. Coming from a musical family, his grandfather was a violinist with the San Francisco Symphony, and his cousin founded Windham Hill Records, where de Grassi was signed. His debut album, "Turning: Turning Back," an instrumental collection of solo guitar pieces, was released in 1978. His second album, "Slow Circle," released in 1979, was the last for Windham Hill to exclusively feature solo guitar work, as the label shifted towards a more new age sound. For his fifth album, "Altiplano," released in 1987 by RCA Novus, de Grassi explored a jazz sound. Following one more new age album, he began incorporating world music influences, especially South American music, in his 1993 album "The World's Getting Loud," which was his last release for Windham Hill. He revisited the South American theme in his 2000 album "Tata Monk." De Grassi received a Grammy nomination for his 1998 album "The Water Garden."
