Alex Reece is a Drum 'n' Bass producer hailing from Ealing, west London. His journey in music began when he was inspired by acid house after hearing Dave Dorrell spin at Love at the Wag club in London. Early in the 'Warehouse' music scene, he reconnected with old school friend Ron Wells (also known as Jack Smooth). Ron established his own record label, Basement/Sound Entity, and Alex was offered the opportunity to assist and engineer for Ron and various artists, including DJ Phantasy, Mayhem, Top Buzz, and Alex Hazzard. During this time, he also collaborated with Wax Doctor and DJ Pulse. By late 1993, Alex, who was writing and producing with Jack Smooth, set up his own studio, Acid Lab, with his brother Oscar. They utilized the Ensoniq Sampler, which had been instrumental in many early Basement releases and would later be passed to Utah Jazz. Wax Doctor, Loft Groover, and DJ Pulse became regulars at the Ealing-based studio, and the Original Playboys (featuring Pim) joined the team in the following years. After releasing tracks on Creative Wax, Metalheadz, and Basement, Alex signed with Island Records in 1995.
