Ali Mohammed Birra, born Ali Mohammed Musa on September 29, 1947 (or possibly 1950) in Ganda Kore, Dire Dawa, was an Ethiopian singer, composer, poet, and nationalist. He began his musical career at the age of 13 by joining the Afran Qallo Cultural Group, which focused on promoting and performing Oromo music. His stage name "Birra" came from his performance of the song "Birra Da Bari'e" or "Spring Has Dawned," one of the first widely performed Oromo songs. After the Afran Qallo group was banned by the government, he moved to Addis Ababa, where he became known as a versatile singer, performing in Oromo, Amharic, Somali, Arabic, and Afar. Birra passed away on November 6, 2022.
