Alice Coltrane, also known by her adopted Sanskrit name Turiyasangitananda, was born on August 27, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, USA, and passed away on January 12, 2007, in Los Angeles, California, USA. She was an American jazz musician and composer, renowned for her skills as a pianist and harpist, making her one of the few harpists in the history of jazz. Coltrane began recording albums as a leader in the late 1960s and early 1970s for various record labels. She was married to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, with whom she performed from 1966 to 1967; they had a son, Ravi Coltrane, who is also a saxophonist. A prominent figure in spiritual jazz, her eclectic music had a significant influence both within and outside the jazz community. In the mid-1970s, Coltrane's professional music career slowed as she became more focused on her religious education. She founded the Vedantic Center in 1975 and established the Shanti Anantam Ashram in California in 1983, where she served as spiritual director. On July 3, 1994, she rededicated and inaugurated the land as Sai Anantam Ashram. During the 1980s and 1990s, Coltrane recorded several albums of Hindu devotional songs before returning to jazz in the 2000s
