Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987, during the rise of the grunge movement. The band was founded when guitarist Jerry Cantrell met vocalist Layne Staley, who was previously part of a local glam-metal band called Sleze, later renamed Alice N’ Chains. Cantrell persuaded Staley to join a new project that combined heavy metal with darker, introspective lyrics. Along with drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr, Alice in Chains quickly established themselves in Seattle’s underground club scene. The band distinguished themselves from other grunge acts with their strong metal influences, gloomy atmosphere, and unique vocal harmonies between Staley and Cantrell. They signed with Columbia Records in 1989, a significant milestone that set them apart from many local bands. Their debut album, Facelift (1990), achieved breakthrough success, particularly with the single "Man in the Box," which received extensive airplay on MTV. As their popularity grew, their music became darker and more emotionally charged. Albums like Dirt (1992) showcased personal struggles, especially Staley’s battle with addiction. Despite facing internal challenges, Alice in Chains emerged as one of the most influential bands of the early 1990s. Following Staley’s death in 2002, the band reunited in 2005 with singer William DuVall and has since continued to release critically acclaimed albums. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell has also produced several well-received solo albums. Current
