Alquimia (pronounced al-key-meea) is a Mexican female multi-instrumentalist and vocalist known for her unique blend of electronic, ethnical, and classical music. With a foundation in vocals and piano, she enhances her recordings with layers of looped vocals, electronic processors, sound effects, samples, synthesizers, gongs, and bells. This results in a sound that merges the musical traditions of Latin America with influences from rock, pop, avant-garde, classical, and improvisational music. Born in Mexico, Alquimia developed an early passion for music and singing, influenced by her mother, a classical opera singer. She pursued her studies in France and Canada before settling in England. Despite being far from home, her interest in the ethnic musical styles of Mexico led her to learn various pre-Columbian percussion instruments and flutes, while her quest for new sounds drove her to explore modern music technology. Alquimia has recorded numerous albums, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with various writers and musicians.
