Alton Ellis, along with The Flames, which originally included his brother Leslie Ellis, David "Baby G" Gordon, and Ronnie, formed a musical group after Alton left a previous label due to dissatisfaction with payment for his earlier recordings. He signed a contract with a new label and quickly found success, scoring a major hit in 1965 with the anti-violence plea "Dance Crasher." In 1966, he released what is considered one of the first rocksteady singles, "Get Ready - Rock Steady." Over time, the membership of The Flames fluctuated, with other musicians joining the group. In 1973, when Alton Ellis moved to England, all his band projects in Jamaica ceased.
