Amaro Freitas is a Brazilian jazz pianist, songwriter, and arranger born on September 18, 1991, in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. He is known for pioneering a new sound of Brazilian jazz that deeply reflects the spirit of his hometown. His heavily percussive approach to jazz draws from the Afro-Brazilian maracatu, the carnival rhythms of frevo and baião, as well as influences from jazz legends like Coltrane, Parker, and Monk. Amaro began playing piano at the age of 12 in church, guided by his father, who led the church band. His natural talent quickly became evident, leading him to win a place at the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música, although he had to drop out due to financial constraints. Determined to pursue his passion, he gigged at weddings and worked in a call center to fund his music education. A pivotal moment in his journey occurred at age 15 when he discovered a DVD of a Chick Corea concert, inspiring him to dedicate himself to the piano. Despite not owning a piano, Amaro practiced diligently, even using imaginary keys in his bedroom. Eventually, he struck a deal with a local restaurant to practice before opening hours. By the age of 22, he became one of the most sought-after musicians in Recife and the resident pianist at the renowned jazz bar Mingus. During this time, he collaborated with bassist Jean Elton and sought a drummer, eventually forming the Amaro Freitas Trio
