American Gypsy is a funk group that originated in the United States and has been performing since 1963 under various names, including Blue Morning, Orpheus, and Pasadena Ghetto Orchestra. The group began its club performances in Los Angeles in 1971 and later embarked on a two-year tour of Spain. In the early 1970s, they settled in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with a lineup that included Joe Skeete (bass guitar), Michael Hamane (lead guitar), Lorenzo Mills (vocals), Richard James (also known as Ricardo James) (drums), David Harrell (vocals, guitar, sax, flute), and Steve Clisby (vocals, keyboards). During their time in America, the members recorded sessions with several renowned artists, such as Barry White, The Byrds, Young Rascals, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Airplane, Dr. John, and Santana. American Gypsy continued to perform live throughout Europe, becoming one of the more popular R&B and rock acts on the club circuit during that era.
