American Steel is an American punk rock band formed in 1995 in Oakland, California. They were active from 1995 to 2002 and then reunited in 2007, continuing to the present. In 2002, the band members at the time—Henderson, Massey, Peck, and Kissinger—added keyboardist Cory Gowan and felt that their new songs represented a significant change in musical direction, prompting them to operate under a different name. During this period, they did not perform any songs recorded by American Steel. In 2007, Henderson, Massey, and Peck decided to return to a sound more aligned with American Steel's punk rock roots, parted ways with Kissinger and Stephen Loewinsohn (who had replaced Gowan), and reunited with original drummer Healy, reviving the American Steel name. However, this iteration of the band also did not play songs from the Communiqué catalog. After releasing the album "Dear Friends & Gentle Hearts" in 2009 and touring for a few years, bassist Peck moved overseas, leading to a mostly inactive period for the band. Despite this, they have not officially disbanded and occasionally perform shows and record new material, including the 2019 single "State of Grace."
