Amon Düül II is a psychedelic and progressive rock band formed in 1968 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The band emerged from an artistic and political community known for its collective and free musical improvisations. Amon Düül II debuted with the eccentric album "Phallus Dei" in 1969, featuring musicians such as Chris Karrer and frontwoman Renate Knaup, with contributions from Holger Trützsch on tribal percussion. The band's follow-up album, "Yeti," released in 1970, showcased a more accomplished sound with structured songs and epic improvisations, helping to launch their career outside Germany. The same year, bass guitarist Dave Anderson left the band to join another group. In 1972, they released "Tanz Der Lemminge," which featured a diverse range of powerful songs alongside long free-form jams. "Carnival in Babylon," also released in 1972, marked a shift towards shorter, more conventional songs, highlighted by Renate Knaup's beautiful vocals. The classical period of the band concluded with "Wolf City" (1972) and "Vive La Trance" (1973). After Knaup's departure in 1974 and the release of several albums, Amon Düül II disbanded. In 1981, Chris Karrer attempted to reform the band with the album "Vortex," which did not achieve significant success. The band reformed in 1995, releasing "Nada Moon
