Angelo Francesco Lavagnino was an Italian composer, arranger, conductor, and violinist, born on February 22, 1909, in Genoa, Italy. He grew up in a musical family and developed an early interest in film music during the silent era, inspired by live theater orchestras. Lavagnino studied composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music in Milan under Renzo Bossi, graduating in the early 1930s. He composed several symphonies, chamber music, symphonic poems, and one opera, and served as a teacher at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena from ages 32 to 53. In the early 1950s, Lavagnino began composing music for films, ultimately amassing credits for approximately 300 movies by the time he retired two decades later. His notable works include scores for Orson Welles' "Othello" and "Chimes at Midnight," the science fiction thriller "Gorgo," the fantasy film "Lost Continent," the adventure film "Legend of the Lost," and the costume epic "The Last Days of Pompeii" (1960). Lavagnino was known for his melodic gift and orchestration talent, particularly evident in the scores for "Gorgo" and "Legend of the Lost."
