Anita Carter was an American country singer, musician, and songwriter, born on March 13, 1933, in Maces Spring, Virginia. She was known for her skills with the upright bass, guitar, and autoharp. Carter charted five times on the U.S. country charts between 1966 and 1971, with her highest entry being at #41 with the song "Tulsa County." As a songwriter, she achieved chart success twice, first with "I'm Gonna Leave You," which she performed in 1966 (co-written with her sister Helen Carter), and "Rosanna's Going Wild," which was recorded by Johnny Cash and reached #2 on the country charts (co-written with sisters June Carter Cash and Helen Carter). In addition to her solo work, Carter had notable duet performances, including "Down the Trail of Achin' Hearts" and "Bluebird Island," both in 1951, which charted at #2 and #4, respectively, on the U.S. country charts. She also collaborated with Waylon Jennings on the duet "I Got You" in 1968, which peaked at #4 on the country charts. Carter's personal life included a brief marriage to a fiddler in 1950, which was annulled shortly thereafter, followed by a marriage to a session musician in 1953, which ended in divorce and subsequent remarriage.
