Ann Sothern was an American actress and singer, renowned for her work across stage, radio, film, and television. Born on January 22, 1909, in Valley City, North Dakota, she grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in a family with musical roots; her mother was a concert singer and her father an importer/exporter. Sothern began taking piano lessons at the age of five and later studied at the McPhail School of Music, where her mother taught. She accompanied her mother on concert tours when her school schedule allowed. Throughout her illustrious career, which spanned six decades, Sothern appeared in 64 movies and 175 TV episodes. She sang with notable orchestras, including Artie Shaw and His Orchestra. Sothern was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as Tisha Doughty in her final film, The Whales of August, released in 1987. She was married to an actor from 1943 until their divorce in 1949 and was the mother of an actress. Ann Sothern passed away on March 15, 2001, at the age of 92 in Ketchum, Idaho.
