Anna Moffo was a renowned American soprano, born on June 27, 1932, in Wayne, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Radnor High School, she studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and later in Rome on a Fulbright scholarship at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia. Initially considering a life in a nunnery, her passion for music prevailed. Moffo made her professional debut in 1955 as Norine in Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" in Spoleto and gained acclaim later that year as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" in an Italian TV production. She married the director of that production in 1957. Her performances in Salzburg and Vienna bolstered her reputation, and she made her U.S. debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1957 as Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme." Her first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera came with the role of Violetta in Verdi's "La Traviata." Moffo's bel canto repertoire included roles such as Micaela in "Carmen," Gilda in "Rigoletto," and Liu in "Turandot."
