Archie Bell is an American vocalist, born on September 1, 1944, in Henderson, Texas. He is best known as the former lead singer of the group he formed, the Drells, in 1966 while still in high school. Influenced by the performances of Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, Bell began singing in Houston night clubs at the age of ten. The Drells achieved fame with their hit "Tighten Up." Following the group's breakup in 1980, Bell pursued a solo career, releasing the album "I Never Had It So Good" in 1981 under Beckett Records. He continued to perform with the Drells until the 1990s. Bell is the son of Langston and Ruthie Bell and the second oldest of seven brothers, including Ricky Bell, a USC and NFL football player, and Jerry Bell, a former world karate champion and singer.
