Archie Shepp, born on May 24, 1937, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is an American jazz saxophonist known for his work primarily on the tenor saxophone, but he also plays soprano saxophone, clarinet, and piano. In addition to being a musician, he is a singer, jazz composer, and playwright. Shepp gained recognition in the 1960s for his Afrocentric positions, denouncing the injustices faced by African-Americans. He was involved with the New York Contemporary Five and collaborated with notable musicians such as Horace Parlan, Cecil Taylor, and John Coltrane. He is regarded as a significant figure in the Black Arts Movement. He is also the father of a photographer.
