Areski Belkacem, born on January 23, 1940, in Versailles, France, is a composer, multi-instrumental musician, actor, and singer from a Kabyle Algerian family. He is known for his long-time collaborations, particularly with Brigitte Fontaine and Jacques Higelin. Areski's musical journey began when he recorded an album with Higelin in 1969, featuring his composition "Remember." He met Fontaine in the 1960s, and together they formed the unit Niok, performing at the Théâtre du Lucernaire in Paris. Areski accompanied Fontaine and the Art Ensemble of Chicago in the performance of "Comme à la radio" at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier. In 1970, he starred in the film "Ça va, ça vient" directed by Pierre Barouh and composed music for director Peter Brook while also acting at the International Theatrical Research Center. Throughout the 1970s, Areski and Fontaine created numerous performances that blended theatre and music. Although the 1980s were less productive for them, they produced "Act 2," featuring Areski interpreting Fontaine's texts and performing duets with her. His reputation was revitalized in 1992 with the album "French Corazon" and the hit "Le Nougat."
