Armand Schaubroeck Steals is an experimental band founded on January 31, 1963, in Rochester, NY. The band initially consisted of brothers playing guitar and vocals, drums, and bass. The band's namesake, Armand Schaubroeck, had a tumultuous past; in 1962, at the age of seventeen, he was sentenced to three years in jail for a series of 32 burglaries, which included grocery stores, hardware stores, schools, and a church. He was charged with safecracking and sent to the Elmira State Reformatory, a maximum-security prison in New York, where he remained for a year and a half before being released on parole. He named his band Armand Schaubroeck Steals, and his music became a cathartic expression of the obsessions that haunted him. His sound drew inspiration from artists like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and Kim Fowley, infused with a provocative sense of humor reminiscent of Andy Kaufman, and a distinctive rebellious attitude stemming from his financial independence. Schaubroeck and his brothers established a successful music store, which provided him access to a wide range of instruments. With relative monetary freedom, Schaubroeck built a studio in the store's basement, created Mirror Records, and recorded several albums that were personal, obsessive, ironic, and deliberately
