Art Blakey and His Jazz Messengers were an archetypal hard-bop group that emerged in the late 1950s, with their origins dating back to 1954 or '55 when their first recordings were released. Known for their driving and aggressive style, which extended bop with pronounced blues roots, the group remained active until Blakey's death in 1990. The name "Jazz Messengers" had been used previously, but it was revived by Blakey and his band in the early 1950s after being dormant for several years. Initially formed as a collective led by either Horace Silver or Blakey, the original lineup included Blakey, Silver, and others, but was relatively short-lived. By late 1956, Blakey was the only remaining original member. Throughout their existence, the Jazz Messengers served as a springboard for young jazz musicians, providing a platform for emerging talent in the jazz scene.
