Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers were an archetypal hard-bop group that emerged in the late 1950s, with their origins dating back to 1954 or '55 when their first recordings were released. Known for their driving and aggressive sound that extended bop with pronounced blues roots, the group remained active until Blakey's death in 1990. Although the name Jazz Messengers had been used earlier, it became prominent again when Blakey and pianist Horace Silver collaborated in the early 1950s, reviving the dormant name. The original lineup included Blakey, Silver, and other musicians, but it was relatively short-lived, with Blakey and Silver being the key figures. By late 1956, Blakey was the only remaining original member. Throughout their history, the Jazz Messengers served as a springboard for young jazz musicians, providing a proving ground for emerging talent.
