Art Blakey was an influential American jazz drummer and bandleader, born on October 11, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a key figure in the development of hard bop, a style of jazz that emerged in the 1950s. Blakey was known for his powerful drumming and his ability to mentor young musicians, leading groups such as the Jazz Messengers, which became a proving ground for many notable jazz artists. He recorded extensively throughout his career and was celebrated for his energetic performances and innovative contributions to jazz. Blakey passed away on October 16, 1990.
