Art Tatum was an American jazz pianist, born on October 13, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, and passed away on November 5, 1956, in Los Angeles, California. Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, he suffered from cataracts from infancy, which left him blind in one eye and with limited vision in the other. Tatum's technical proficiency set a new standard for jazz piano virtuosity, influencing generations of jazz pianists. He was hailed by critics, with one jazz critic describing him as "the greatest soloist in jazz history, regardless of instrument." Tatum was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1964 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.
