Arthur Russell was an American cellist, composer, and artist, born on May 21, 1951, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He passed away on April 4, 1992, in New York City at the age of 40. Raised in Iowa, Russell studied cello and began composing music. In the early 1970s, he moved to California to study Indian music at the Ali Akbar Khan School in San Francisco, where he collaborated with various artists. In the mid-1970s, Russell relocated to New York City, contributing to The Flying Hearts and performing with notable musicians such as David Byrne and Jon Gibson. From 1975 to 1979, he was part of an ensemble that performed and recorded the orchestral composition "Instrumentals." In 1978, he produced the disco single "Kiss Me Again" under the name Dinosaur, marking the beginning of his innovative dance music career. This was followed by "Is It All Over My Face" by Loose Joints in 1980. In 1982, Russell co-founded Sleeping Bag Records, releasing "24-24 Music," which featured the track "Go Bang." His album "Tower Of Meaning" was released in 1983, showcasing a meditative composition conducted by Julius Eastman.
