Artie Shaw, born on May 23, 1910, in New York City, was an influential American clarinetist and bandleader known for his significant contributions to jazz and popular music during the late 1930s and 1940s swing era. He made his first public appearance leading his own band on May 24, 1936, in New York City and quickly rose to prominence. Shaw toured as a performing clarinetist with a big band until 1950 and made his last public performances with a small group in 1954. His final recordings of new material, where he conducted without playing, took place in 1955. In the latter half of his life, Shaw focused on writing and other pursuits but returned to the recording studios in 1968 to conduct an album featuring some of his biggest instrumental hits from 1938-39, collaborating with veteran musicians from the Swing Era. In 1983, he surprised the music world by assembling a 16-piece touring big band, which he led until 1987. Shaw aimed for this band to focus on jazz and lesser-known works from 1944-45 and 1949, as well as new material, much of which remained unrecorded. Throughout his life, he was married eight times, including marriages in 1940 and from 1945-46.
