Guo Yongzhang, born in 1945 in Su Daogou Village, Mudan District, Heze, Shandong, is a master of zhuizi, a traditional Chinese narrative singing style. With a career spanning over fifty years, he has dedicated himself to this art form, which originated in Henan province over a century ago. Guo performs with the zhuihu, a two-stringed bowed lute, and the zhuibang, a wooden percussion instrument played with foot tapping. Despite being almost completely blind, he is celebrated for his unique vocal style, characterized by its resounding yet smooth quality. His lyrics reflect both the struggles and virtues of life, infused with humor. Regarded as a folk master, Guo tirelessly travels from village to village, often performing all day for ordinary people. As he approaches the end of his life, he expresses concern that few are willing to learn the art of zhuizi, fearing that this precious cultural heritage may soon be lost.
