Ashford and Simpson were a husband and wife songwriting-production team who began their collaboration in 1964. They achieved their first hit with "Let's Go Get Stoned," recorded by another artist, two years later. The duo took staff positions at Motown, where they wrote and produced hits for various artists. During their time at Motown, Valerie released a couple of solo albums that did not succeed, leading them to leave the label in 1973. Following this, Ashford and Simpson focused on creating their own records, while also writing the hit "I'm Every Woman." They eventually gained recognition as artists in their own right and had two daughters. In 2002, both were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
